AMC Fright Fest Ruled

If you watched AMC's month-long Fright Fest then you know how hard it ruled. John Carpenter's The ThingHalloween and Friday the 13th marathons and Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street as well as George A. Romero and zombie movies for days on end. And all of it was leading up to the premiere of the ground-breaking TV show, The Walking Dead (see previously posts for more information) on October 30th. It was everything and more for horror enthusiasts and casual viewers. If you missed it then you're horrible.

Top Ten Movies to Watch This Halloween

There are some movie traditions I always follow each year. At the beginning of every summer I watch Jaws and end up too afraid to go into the water. Every Christmas my mother and I watch It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street consecutively. And every Halloween I watch, drum roll please.....wait, I can't give that away yet. Here are my top ten movies to watch on Halloween weekend. Not all of them are heart-stopping horror films but all capture the spirit of the holiday.

Zombieland...the Sequel?

All you horror comedy aficionados out there - rejoice! Sony Pictures as well as the director Ruben Fleischer seem pretty serious about creating a sequel to their 2009 hit Zombieland. And this time it's in 3D (!!!). With the main anchor of the first movie, Jesse Eisenberg, saying he's "probably excited" (before the movie was confirmed) to return to the set of the second film we can imagine that all the main actors will be returning.IMDB has the release date for sometime in 2011 so until then enjoy this video:

Upcoming in October

Creepy girl, Jodelle Ferland
The Last Exorcism and Devil not enough? Well October is the Holy Grail of horror films - a figurative gold mine for horror enthusiasts. Two movies are hitting wide release with two more in limited this weekend alone. Are you into the vampire craze that's sweeping the country currently? Let Me In is about a young boy who is bullied at school and the vampire - eternally a young girl - that befriends him. Also in wide release is Case 39 starring 15-year-old Jodelle Ferland who seems destined to play the creepy child in every horror movie. Case 39 follows Emily Jenkins (Renée Zellweger), a social worker who encounters a young child in a case which initially seems like a normal abusive parents case but turns into much, much more (of course).

Other horror movies dropping this month include: Chain Letter (Oct 1), Hatchet II (Oct 1), My Soul To Take (Oct 8), I Spit On Your Grave (Oct 8), Hereafter (Oct 15; Wide: Oct 22), Paranormal Activity 2 (Oct 22), Saw 3D (Oct 29), Monsters (Oct 29) and Night of the Demons (Oct 29). Check your local theaters for showtimes.

Walking Dead Official Poster

The official poster for AMC's new series The Walking Dead has been released this week on AMC's Walking Dead blog. Spinoff Online calls the poster "haunting while FEARnet calls it iconic and awesome".

The series, which premieres on Halloween, is about a zombie apocalypse and follows a group of survivors that travel together to find shelter and food. Based off of Robert Kirkman's comic of the same name, the series has gained a lot of critical praise already from such sources as Elle Magazine and The Washington Post, which says the trailer "hints at being a high-quality zombie saga for the discerning viewers' braayiiiiins". With a month still left before the premiere, viewers will have to wait to see if the series will be worth their time or not. Until then: here's the official four minute (!) trailer to hold you over.

M. Night is at it again

With the success of his movies slowly declining since The Sixth Sense hit theaters in 1999 (his Rotten Tomatoes rating has dropped from 85% with The Sixth Sense to 6% with his more recent endeavor The Last Airbender), I am not entirely sure why his films keep getting distributed on a regular basis. The tides might be changing with his second movie of the year, Devil, which opened this weekend to fairly decent reviews compared to Shyamalan's recent work on The Last Airbender, The Happening and Lady in the Water. It has a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 35% higher than The Last Airbender and on the same level as The Village's 42% in 2004, and reviews are saying that, while the film isn't great, it's not bad either. This could be because M. Night has finally gotten a clue but it is more likely that he is solely the writer and the producer - not the director. Instead, brothers Drew Dowdle and John Erick Dowdle were behind the camera this time and perhaps a fresh set of eyes may have helped Devil's overall impact as a horror movie.

However, audiences may not take Devil seriously due to it's concept of a possessed elevator with the Devil on board and, as seen by this video, Shyamalan obviously doesn't have the pull he used to. At a screening for Inception, the audience laughs and groans at seeing his name cross the screen.
