M. Night is at it again

With the success of his movies slowly declining since The Sixth Sense hit theaters in 1999 (his Rotten Tomatoes rating has dropped from 85% with The Sixth Sense to 6% with his more recent endeavor The Last Airbender), I am not entirely sure why his films keep getting distributed on a regular basis. The tides might be changing with his second movie of the year, Devil, which opened this weekend to fairly decent reviews compared to Shyamalan's recent work on The Last Airbender, The Happening and Lady in the Water. It has a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 35% higher than The Last Airbender and on the same level as The Village's 42% in 2004, and reviews are saying that, while the film isn't great, it's not bad either. This could be because M. Night has finally gotten a clue but it is more likely that he is solely the writer and the producer - not the director. Instead, brothers Drew Dowdle and John Erick Dowdle were behind the camera this time and perhaps a fresh set of eyes may have helped Devil's overall impact as a horror movie.

However, audiences may not take Devil seriously due to it's concept of a possessed elevator with the Devil on board and, as seen by this video, Shyamalan obviously doesn't have the pull he used to. At a screening for Inception, the audience laughs and groans at seeing his name cross the screen.
